British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
